Frederick Horace Onslow
1917921825first name on monumentBorm May 3, 1825 in Paris, Seine, France Died July 27, 1919 Frederick was more of an Englishman than a Frenchman, and indeed possessed a double nationality, as he was both a French and British subject. He was educated in England and spoke English without an accent, while French he spoke with an English accent. In his early life he lived alone in Canada during the 1840s, in fact he had intended to settle there, but before doing so he cam home on a visit and changed his mind, married and settled in France. Frederic became collector of taxes at Biarritz southern France in the Basses-Pyrenees where he lived for many years. After retiring on a pension, he lived for many years at Tamaris a village in the Basses-Alps in western France near Toulon and later at Nice. Frederick was a man of great charm of manner, a painter of no small bent, artistic, cultivated and well-informed. He had an interesting and adventurous life in early days in Canada. He was a man of great energy and vitality and at the age of 87 in 1912 he went to Canada accompanied by Mrs. Onslow then with one leg which she had lost as a result of a fall from a horse to visit his son Arthur who had settled in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

I have been tracing my Onslow Family history for 40 years, and showed that Frederic Horace died in 1919. His Grand Daughter Valentine Onslow lived in Niagara on the Lake. His Son Arthur was a member of the North West Mounted Police in Alberta, Ontario. Look forward to the picture for my files. I have traced my Onslow Families back to 1174, and it never ceases to amaze me what I find.
