Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

I believe this Margaret Hughes is the same as the one who lived in the old cottage on Groomsdale Lane in Hawarden and traded by cart between Hawarden and Chester for many years. If correct she is a part of the history of Hawarden and her photograph with horse and cart appears in the local history books. Prime Minister William Gladstone settled in the village after retiring from Parliament and is said to have given Margaret, who lived then in the same cottage that at that time belonged to the estate he had bought, some cast off scottish capes to keep her warm when out and about in her later years; as a result of which she got the nickname Lady Margaret. The cottage she lived (now modernised and lived in as a family home called The Croft) in was on land purchased by the LA in the 1960s from Hawarden Estate becoming part of Hawarden High School, and remains set in this ten acres the school and county continue own and mange as a wildlife and habitat and community project/outdoor classroom. In our environmental experience lessons we use the area and references to Margaret are made as part of touching on the history of the site. This picture would be a very useful addition to that teaching work and I assure you we would be grateful for a copy of it. Many thanks Reg Barritt

Samuel Hughes is the brother to my 2nd Great Grandmother Ann Hughes Hall. I am trying to get photographs of as many members of the family as I can. Thanks for this service.
