Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Among the first cousins of my great grandmother Kate Davis were sisters Mary and Hannah Ferris who married the brothers Ralph and George Cornock. Mary's husband Ralph Ernest Cornock 1871-1914, who had joined the Royal Navy in 1887, was killed when his ship HMS Monmouth was sunk at the battle of Coronel. Ralph's brother Archibald Alexander Cornock 1889-1915 was a pre-war regular soldier who had become a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion the Border Regiment when he died of wounds in Gallipoli. Another brother Sidney Cornock 1883-1916 was killed in action in France while serving in the 13th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. His letters to his wife survived in large numbers and were used to write a play. The brothers' mother Ruth Cornock was asked to unveil the war memorial in Wotton-under-Edge as she had lost three sons and two grandsons serving their king and country. I am told that a further five sons were wounded on active service. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission website shows the grave in this image as belonging to one of Ruth Cornock's grandsons, E C Cornock, son of Charles and Millicent Cornock. The CWGC website shows him as an Able Seaman died on the 14th April 1919, age 22, at HMS Vivid, the shore base at Devonport.
