Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

David Ritchie raised my great great-grandfather Rev. William Ritchie after the death of his parents. William Ritchie married Anne Sibbald and went to British Guyana and then to Upper Canada to Sibbald's Point near Sutton West Ontario. They named my great-grandmother Agnes Pearson Ritchie. My mum always wondered why Pearson, but now I can guess why - given the name Pearson on the gravestone. Thanks for sending the image. I hope to see the actual grave in a couple of weeks when we travel to Scotland... L. Harris

This is rather a long story. A number of us have been searching for a William Aitken and his wife Jane Harvey for a number of years. William Aitken is described in various records as a Gentleman's Servant, Butler, Clerk and Gardener. We do know that his wife Jane died in January 1841 at 28 Broughton Place which was owned by the Rev David Ritchie and some years earlier a Miss Margaret Aitken is shown at the same address. So the thought is that the Aitken family may have been employed by Rev David Ritchie for a very long period. Currently we are trying to learn as much as possible about him in the hope that there may be some clue as to where he came from. We have a copy of his Will but so far cannot spot any bequest to an Aitken - understandably for they were all deceased prior to 1844. Many thanks for the great work you are doing in helping people trace memorials. Malcolm
