William Aliff
1737521685first name on monumentThe inscription on the headstone reads: HERE Lyeth the Body of WILLIAM ALIFF who Died April the 21st 1737 Aged 52 YEARS HERE ALSO LIES the Body of ELIZABETH ALIFF his Wife who Died February the 18th 1759 Aged 70 YEARS. The stone, while easily legible, has at some time been sunk into the ground (presumably to stabilise it), and there is clear evidence of further engraving lower on the stone, but this cannot be read. Elizabeth's maiden name was LILLE. She and William had 10 children between 1712 and 1735. The spelling of the name Aliff is only one of a dozen or more variations down the generations, which by the mid-1800s had settled on Elliff.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

William Aliff/Elliff is an ancestor. I visited the churchyard two years ago, but could not make out the inscription on this gravestone. I know from other records that William and Elizabeth (also known as Elizabeth Lille) lived in Tandridge. William died 21 April 1737, Elizabeth on 18 Feb 1759. I have not been able to trace the family back any further.
