Ann Smith
1830511779first name on monumentThe date of death shown here is incorrect. Another photograph of this gravestone shown on another website, although misleading because part of the inscription is not shown, suggesting that the monument is to Thomas Smith not his wife Ann, does clearly show the date of her death as 25 Sep 1859. This is in agreement with information I have obtained from the church's burial registry. Ann, maiden name Hoyes, was born on 16 Jun 1807 at Harlaxton, Lincolnshire. She married Thomas Smith, a carpenter and joiner, on 09 May 1830 at Harlaxton. The couple lived at Barrowby for most of the rest of their lives.
Thomas Smith
husband of Ann SmithThomas was born at Barrowby on 01 Jun 1805. He served a 7 year apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner from 1820 to 1827. He married Ann Hoyes at Harlaxton on 09 May 1830. The couple had 6 known children. Ann died on 25 Sep 1859. Thomas remarried before the 1861 census to a lady named Elizabeth, surname unknown but born at Malton, Yorkshire about 1815. Thomas died on 26 Feb 1887 and Elizabeth on 09 Nov 1888. The grave memorial to Thomas is shown on this website as grave 17307, image 6189. The dates shown have not been correctly transcribed. There is a monument to Elizabeth but this is not shown on this website

Please note that all ages and dates of birth in red have been calculated and are probably not on the monument.

The calculated dates of birth should be treated with caution as in many cases it can be one year out.

The calculated dates of birth should also be treated with caution as the ages given on monuments are often inaccurate.

The names above are all the names that are listed on the grave monument. It is most likely that only the entries with dates and ages are interred in the grave.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

I am researching the Smith family of Barrowby of which I am a member. I hope that the inscription on this grave may remove confusion which I currently have regarding Ann's death and give a clue has to when Thomas might have married his second wife, Elizabeth.
