Edwin knew the owners of all the Ocean Greyhounds of his day and competed in many of the races, one being The Kaiser’s Cup on a 330 mile race from Dover to Heligoland in the Gwynfa, losing by only 40 minutes and that because a squall hit the boat in the North Sea. After retiring from the sea he and his wife settled in Warsash, Hampshire and took up strawberry farming.

Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Edwin William and Harriet (Hill) Buckett were the in-laws of my great-uncle Henry Thomas Butt who married their daughter Vivian May Buckett on January 10, 1915 in the Parish Church, Warsash. Edwin was a well known mariner in the area and after retiring from the sea he took up strawberry growing on his land on Church Road, Warsash.
