Gawen wilkinson (1774-1811)is my third ggg grandfather. He came to America by 1800 when the Pulteney Estate was selling lands in western New York. He married Rachel Martin and had two children, Ann (1803-1877) and John (1808-1884). The history of Livingston County New York states that he came from Shoulthwaite, Cumberland, England. His will states that he had a brother John (abt 1770- ) living in New York at the time he died in 1811. His daughter Ann is my gg grandmother. His son John was a successful lawyer. There is also an Ann Wilkinson McNair (married name)(1777 -1855) who lived in the area. I don't know if she is a sister to Gawen. I think Gawen may be related to the John Wilkinson (1772-1852)buried at St John's. Does anyone know the details of this John's life there (1772-1852) in England? I have a public tree on Ancestry.com titled Steineck/Howe/Shafer/Oakley. Ann Wilkinson (1803-1877) married my 2nd gg grandfather Jacob Shafer in Livingston County New York. Perhaps the John Wilkinson mentioned in the 1811 will is the same as the John buried here at St. Johns. I can't find John Wilkinson in New York except for his mention in his brother Gawen's will.

John Wilkinson may be the brother of my third great grandfather. I have left a comment on the web page for the gravestone. Gawen Wilkinson was born 1774 at Shoulthwaite, Cumberland. He and his brother John were in the Sparta/North Dansville New York area from 1800-1811. Gawen died in 1811, and his will lists his brother John Wilkinson as a beneficiary. John was a member of William McCartney's company (militia) at that time. William McCartney came from Kirkcudbright Scotland and worked for the land agent Charles Williamson (he represented the Pulteney Estate interests in New York).
