Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

I am active on the Coastguards of Yesteryear website/forum, and Hugh McCaughan was a Coastguard from Ireland. This would help me answer an enquiry from a user of the site. Many thanks Martin (Crimea1854)

I'm researching my great great great grandfather Hugh McCaughan who was a coastguard stationed in various Yorkshire c/g stations from 1827-1853. He was originally born in Ballycastle, Co Antrim. I'm not sure if this headstone relates to him but the 1841 census identifies his as the only McCaughan family in Scarborough. However, the information on this headstone doesn't quite tally with what I (thought) I already know. Hugh was married twice and I understood his first wife to be called Matilda who died in 1838. He married again in 1840 to an Ann Brain and had a second family. A child called Matilda was born and died in 1841 and I have assumed this to be the first child of the second marriage. Something doesn't quite add up so the hunt continues! Regards Alan Nixon
