Reasons why the image for this memorial was requested

Dorothy Mary Radcliffe Drew, known as “Dolly”, was the fourth child of parents who were both teachers and musicians: Harry Drew (1851-1895) and Georgiana Emily Down (1850-1939). Her grandfather was Joseph Drew (1815-1883) a multi-talented famous resident of Weymouth, whose life is documented on the Wikipedia website. 1883 Dolly was born on 18 October at Weymouth, Dorset, in the home of her grandmother Caroline Agnes Drew, after her parents’ return from Ceylon, where her father had been organist and teacher at St. Thomas College, Colombo, Ceylon, and her mother the first principal of the nearby Bishopsgate School. Dolly became a primary school teacher. At the age of 28, she married Thomas Searle Barnes on 27 July 1912 at St. Stephen’s Church, Norbury, in South London. They had two sons, Robert Barnes and John Down Barnes. In 1979 her sister Gladys Ryan reported to her niece Dorothy that Dolly had moved from her flat to a care home of her own selection, Haxby Hall, Haxby, near York, with her son John keeping a close eye on her. Gladys said “her mind is 100% and her sense of humour (precious possession) lively”. Dolly was 98 when she died. Dorothy Barnes was sister of my grandfather Harry Guy Radcliffe Drew, and aunt of my mother Dorothy and her sister the architect Jane Drew. John Morrison, Christmas Day 2016.
