Johnson Gent. Levington
By consulting the parish register for Levington, Suffolk it was discovered that the gentleman buried at Levington was Stephen Johnson, buried 13th May 1844, aged 65. The PR also states that he was of St Clements, Ipswich Suffolk

Johnson (Gent) - St. Peter's, Levington, Suffolk
Hi,I recently got the image form this site, but the quality if not great and I cannot make out much of the detail which is not transcribed. Could someone please make a new set of photos of this tomb, and try and work out what the text says. I can make out small bits before the image is blocky. It is a stone coffin shaped monument with Johnson (Gent) on the side. Looks like he dies May 9 18??.Cemetery name: St PeterCemetery location: Levington, Suffolk

The memorial to Johnson Gent. is one of my photographs recording Levington churchyard, and the reason nothing else was transcribed is because the stone was worn and it was impossible to make out any further information. It may be helpful for you to look at the parish register to find out who exactly Johnson Gent. was, and when he was buried. If you are not able to look at the PR yourself, the Ipswich Record Office would do it for you for a fee. The volunteers spend their own time and money photographing memorials, but what they don't do is work on research for those requesting images.

Hi, Sorry if I've offended you but I was only hoping for a better quality photo. You cannot zoom into this one much without it becoming blocky.
I understand that graves are worn but I can make out more than just a surname. That he was from ??cklesham which could be Bucklesham or Micklesham, I can make out 9th May 18??, I can also see the first name ends in 'N' and possibly John. Any of these words may appear clearer on another photo.
I too am a volunteer and I never thoroughly investgate the grave writing in depth. But if someone asks for help and if it's not out of my way to, I'm always happy to retake a photo when local. I was not asking for research, just a photo, from someone who may of been in the area.
Sometimes just a different angle of light makes the writing appear clearer. Sometimes I've even found just brushing away a leaf helps. Not every photo is perfect we know (especially when photographing hundreds), but we should all be able to ask for help without fear of offending anyone.
I'll try and research other ways.I have since searched the records, and it seems Johnson is rare in this churchyard/area. So it was quite easy. I have now found the information that matches; Stephen Johnson (gent), age 65, died 09 May 1844 and buried at St. Peters on 13 May 1844 Just coincidence that his name matches mine. But I do not think this is the right Johnson as I am looking for a Thomas Johnson (gent) in the same period. However it is still a ‘possible’ that this would/could be my 4th G-Grandfather or possibly a brother.
