Eleanor Russell | Following secretarial training Eleanor was instrumental in assisting her father in setting up Thomas F. Woodburn & Co the renowned specialist plasterwork & granolithic contractors in Edinburgh. She also became an established businesswoman in her own right with hairdressing salons in Edinburgh & Musselburgh. She served as a Director of her late husband's companies which were managed by her son Kenneth until her death in 1998 aged 89. | |||||||||
John Russell | 1883 | 83 | 1966 | John Russell typified the essential Dominie/Headmaster at a time when Scottish Education led the world. After graduating MA(Hons)from Edinburgh University and DA from Edinburgh College of Art he excelled in various teaching posts before becoming Head of English at Beath Academy going on to become Headmaster of The Calder Schools (now Livingston New Town) Many of his pupils went on to high office in the professions, commerce and in public life both here and overseas. He is synonomous for the series of text books in English Grammar, Writing and Punctuation used throughout schools both in Great Britain and the Commonwealth. He was elected President of The Educational Institute of Scotland and was at the forefront of the National Savings movement during the period of austerity following World War 2. He was awarded the MBE for services to education in 1950. | ||||||
James Russell | 1972 | James Hogg Russell was educated at George Heriot's School, Edinburgh winning dux prizes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and was an athelete and rugby player of distinction.A Bisley crackshot he won the Cup as the outstanding shot at 1,000 yards. He was a prizewinner in the Final Examinations of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in 1932. Aged only 28 he was appointed Chief Surveyor of William Arnott McLeod Ltd one of Scotland's largest construction companies of that time and during WW2 was seconded to the Admiralty as civilian contractor on top secret infrastructure projects including the Invergordon Sunderland Flying Boat project which employed 400 men and was an integral part of the U Boat reconnaissance programme. In 1946 he founded James H Russell & Co (Contractors) Limited a highly regarded and successful Building & Public Works Company synonomous with many major building projects employing over 150 people throughout East Central Scotland. | ||||||||
