		Fabian Anthony Forrest-Bell	1895	52	1947					Inscription:Son of the above Rector of Fordwich; in Kent. Lt. Black Watch 1914 - 18 war. DRAFT - Fabian Anthony Forrest Bell, the younger son of the Rev. John Henry Forrest Bell and his wife, Harriet, was born on 25th January 1895 and was baptised on 25th July that year. He had one elder brother, Frederick, and a younger sister completed the family in 1900. Both boys attended Ellesmere College, Shropshire and Fabian arrived there in September 1905 along with twenty one other new boys. Amongst his direct contemporaries that term were John Benoy, who served in the military through both world wars and ended up as Governor of Eritrea, and Beverley Groser, who was to make a tremendous name for himself in the ecclesiastical world, especially during World War Two when his views were sought by Cabinet Ministers and others in the Government of the time. Another contemporary, Harold Rudge, died during the conflict. Fabian was allocated to the ‘Arthur’ dormitory and this was his home for the next eight years – an extraordinarily long residence at that time of the college’s development. Academically, we know that he sat and passed his Preliminary, Junior and Senior Oxford Local Examinations over the years. He was awarded various prizes over the years including Form II Church History (1908), Form IV Divinity & Church History (1909) and Form VI Church History & English Essay (1912). He was an active member of The Debating Society, a popular form of entertainment amongst the boys at the time, and he went on to take on the post of Secretary in his last year. He trod the boards in two Shakespearian Society productions A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1907) and Julius Caesar (1912) and took on the role of Editor of The Ellesmerian magazine in late 1912, overseeing five issues. He was appointed prefect and also sat on the Games Committee as he was also a sportsman of some repute. Fabian represented his dormitory in football and hockey but also rose to be a member of the 1st XI team in the latter sport. His performance as the outside right in the 1913 season was recorded in the ‘Ellesmerian’ as follows A very useful wing man who did much good. Centres accurately and gets ahead at once. Is inclined occasionally to take the ball too far down the wing. Very keen. On the cricket pitch he played for both the 2nd XI and 1st XI teams, being awarded his full Colours. He left the college in 1913. Misfortune struck the family a year later when his father died. From the limited military records available we have been able to determine that he originally enlisted with the 4th Battalion Royal Highlanders in the rank of Private # 5052. He was promoted Lance Corporal but was put forward for a commission. The Ellesmerian (April 1917) records that … has recently been gazetted to a commission in The Black Watch and is at present stationed at Ripon. His appointment as 2nd Lieutenant 4th Battalion Black watch was effective 24th January 1917 and he arrived for active service in France on 28th September. He saw service at Ypres and on The Somme and was very badly wounded on Good Friday 1918 when in action near Villers – Brettonneux. He was promoted Lieutenant effective 25th July. Fabian survived his wounds, although they would cause him discomfort for the rest of his life and were the cause of his eventual death. He relinquished his commission on 11th September 1918 and was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant. He was awarded The Silver War Badge, The Victory Medal and The British War Medal. He immediately enrolled at St. Chad’s Theological College, Durham University and graduated B.A. in 1921. In December 1922 he was ordained deacon at Aberdeen and appointed priest in charge at the church of St. Margaret’s, Aberdeen. He moved on in 1925 to the incumbency of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Inverkeithing, Perthshire, remaining there until 1929 when he moved to The Priory Church, South Queensferry, West Lothian. On October 1st that year he married Mary Robson at Ripon Cathedral. She was the District Commissioner of The Girl Guides of Ripon. The couple remained in South Queensferry and by the time they left Fabian had, by all accounts, completely restored the priory which was one of the oldest and most beautiful Carmelite prioires in the country. It was in early 1938 that Fabian and Mary moved to the other end of the country and took up residence in Elmstone in Preston, Kent. Whilst here they were very much involved in the local community and Fabian had only been in office for some six months before he was elected chairman of the newly formed local cricket club. In April 1944 Fabian handed over the incumbency and moved to the parish of Fordwich, Canterbury. He died on November 15th 1947 – his death being directly attributed to the wounds and injuries he sustained in 1918. His funeral took place at Coupar Angus, where he had grown up and his father had been Rector for so long. His wife, Mary, died four years later. They did not have any children.
