76ThiébaultPaul Charles François Adrien Henri Dieudonné Thiébault1769771846no image32965411211Born in Berlin; Thiébault volunteered for the French army in 1792 but was accused of involvement in a failed Royalist coup d'état. He was exonerated; and in 1793 rejoined the regular army serving first in Germany; then in northern France; and then in Italy where he distingusihed himself at the capture of Naples. In 1801; he was appointed brigadier-general; and commanded an infantry section at the battle of Austerlitz. In 1806 he was appointed governor of Fulda; and in 1808 he was appointed General. He transferred to the Spanish campaign until 1813; when he returned to Germany. In 1815 he rallied to Napoléon; and was ordered to defend Paris. From 1818-25 he served in army staff positions under the restored Bourbon kings. His name is inscribed on the west side of the Arc de Triomphe. His wife is also buried in this tomb.
Dieudonné Thiébault1733741807 Originally a member of the Jesuits; in 1765 Théibault was appointed professor of grammar at the Berlin Militairy Academy. He became a close friend of Frederick the Great of Prussia; and edited many of his works. In 1784 he returned to France; and in 1789 he was the only person authorised to publish a journal of the deliberations of the Etats Généraux before the revolutionary parliament. He was chief secretary to the Directory government in 1795; and then taught grammar at the renowned Lycée Charlemagne in Paris from 1799-1803; when he became director of the lycée in Versailles.
