His uncle; the 3rd baronet; was the first and last Lord Metcalfe (acting Governor General of Bengal; then Governor successively of Jamaica and Canada). His father; the 4th Baronet; was the Resident at the Mughal Emperor's court and built Metcalfe House on the outskirts of Delhi. The 5th baronet also served in the Indian Civil Service; and was married to a cousin of the Thackeray and Shakepsear families. A member of the Shakespear family is buried in the opposite grave.
