He rose to national fame in 1870 when he recaptured Chateaudun for the French from the Prussians during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. He was promoted to general at the age of 27; but this grade was reduced after the war. He then accepted a commission from the Russian army with the confirmed rank of general.
