1DecrèsDenis Decrès1761182059born into a family with a strong naval tradition he joined the French navy in 1781 and participated in the Battle of Saintes in the American War of Independence At the outbreak of the revolution he was sent to the Indian Ocean with the French fleet but in 1794 he was ordered to return to France where he was promoted to captain only then to be arrested for his noble descent In 1796 he participated in the failed French invasion of Ireland and then joined the Egyptian expedition leading the capture of Malta and participating in the battle of Aboukir Napoléon then appointed him maritime prefect of Lorient and then from 1801-1814 minister for the navy and the colonies He was repsonsible for sending the French fleet to Trafalgar In 1815 he resumed his ministerial position during the Hundred Days but withdrew from public life under the restored monarchy He was murdered by one of his own servants who set fire to his house in att211256
